Lowry Park Zoo
Get up close to gentle, giant manatees, plus more than 1,500 exotic animals in this 24-acre tropical oasis. Rated as one of the top three mid-sized zoos in the country, Lowry Park Zoo features a Native Florida exhibit, Primate World, a children's petting zoo and more. All animals are housed in lush, natural habitats.
E. G. Simmons Regional Park
Hooked on fishing? Do you canoe? Try E.G.Simmons Regional Park. The 469-acre park sits peacefully on Tampa Bay. The adjacent mangrove swamps, with their abundance of bird life, make bird-lovers sing. The narrow sandy beach here has been left in a natural state, with fine, ungroomed sand.
Reaching the Park: Simmons Park is at 19th Avenue NW in Ruskin, off Route 41.
Honeymoon Island
This serene, secluded spot had a very stormy beginning. It was formed in 1921, when a hurricane cleared a strip of beach north of Clearwater. Still largely undeveloped, Honeymoon Island is a good place to picnic, swim, fish, or simply sun. It's also a good spot to bring Spot - there's a special area for pet swimming. The park is open 8am to sunset. For more information, call 813-469-5942.
Reaching the Park: Take Hillsborough Avenue heading northwest to Curlew Road. Turn left onto Curlew Road, which runs into Honeymoon Island.
Sand Key Park
Are good fishing and swimming your key ingredients in your ideal beach? Head to Sand Key Park! A rock barrier that extends into the gulf shields the beach and makes the water just right for swimmers (fish included). Grounds include a park, boardwalk and picnic tables.
Reaching the Park: Take the Howard Franklin Bridge to Roosevelt Blvd. Go west to Bay Drive and cross the Bellair Causeway. Turn right on Gulf Blvd. Sand Key Beach is off Gulf Blvd., south of Clearwater Beach.
Fort Desoto Park
At the southern tip of Pinellas County stands Fort Desoto Park. This 900-acre park covers five islands linked by roads and bridges. You'll find seven miles of waterfront and three miles of good beaches here. Also, fishing piers, boat ramps, a snack bar and picnic and camping facilities. You won't find anywhere to rent water-sports equipment, so bring your own gear and avoid designated swim areas. A trail for biking and in-line skating runs through the park, but if you want to feel the sand between your toes, watch out. Guard yourself against the prickly sand spurs by wearing shoes on the beach. For more information, call 813-866-2484.
Reaching the Park: Take the Howard Franklin Bridge to I-275 South to the Pinellas Bayway exit. Follow the Bayway west and south until you reach the entrance to the park.
